Although the original dome was said to have been made of solid gold, it was replaced with a 1,200 ton lead dome. Israel lies on a geological fault line, and more recent structures have crumbled due to earthquakes. The Dome of the rock has remained intact as a result of the work of the stone masons' sturdy construction.
This huge rock is famous for having been the site of a number of significant events in religious history, and is currently under Islamic control.
